In a sport of competitors you have to have to compete with people who have the same athletic ability and personality as you. The problem with this is most of what sets the bar for what is "competitive" in sport is the same problem that separates the competitive athletes who perform for a living. Most lifters and athletes believe that the sport of football is the pinnacle of athleticism, while the other team is the ultimate goal of athletics. This is not only an erroneous belief, but it is also a way of avoiding the real problems of bodybuilding and CrossFit. It doesn't make sense in any objective or theoretical sense that everyone has the goal of "being the best athlete they can be.
